  • Advanced and Competition Mathematics

Advanced mathematics program building on the school math curriculum. Skills gained are useful for math competitions and olympiads such as SASMO, NMOS, SMOPS and RIPMWC, Mathlympics, AMC and AMC8.

    Teaching Approach

Each lesson starts out with the teacher going through key concepts and examples, followed by students practicing problems under close guidance of the teacher. Our syllabus builds on what students learn in school – this natural progression ensure that students will be able to pick up new mathematical knowledge and skills with ease. The advanced skills acquired in our courses are useful and relevant for math olympiad competitions and GEP.

    Our Learning Focus

    Foundation-Building and Accelerated Learning

    Primary 1 and 2

It is very important to build a strong maths foundation in a child’s early years. This foundation will determine how fast and effectively a child can learn and pick up new mathematical skills and knowledge in the later years of their schooling journey. Our curriculum focuses on building interest, engagement and understanding in the subject. We accelerate learning of the school curriculum even as we start teaching students advanced math concepts

    Acquiring Skills

    Primary 3 and 4

Our students start to learn and practice intermediate and advanced concepts that will help them in high level math tests and competitions such as the GEP Test, SASMO, New South Wales Math Competition, AMC, AMO and ACS(I) Mathlympics.

    Critical Thinking and

    In-Depth Understanding

    Primary 5 and 6

In this stage, we equip students with critical thinking skills, advanced problem solving techniques and in-depth understanding of math topics in order to score well in the toughest math competitions. We will expose them to a variety of competition questions of progressive difficulty, and show them how to accurately evaluate each question, and choose the best method to solve for the answer.

  • PSLE Math

    Follows MOE curriculum

    Teaching Approach

Each lesson starts out with the teacher going through key concepts and examples, followed by students practicing problems under close guidance of the teacher. Our syllabus follows the MOE school curriculum – this ensures that we give students the opportunity to practice, and the confidence to do well in school tests and exams. We believe in maximizing each student’s potential, and accelerate their learning whenever possible to keep them engaged and excited about mathematics. Students with potential can expect to be learning mathematics at 1 or 2 levels above their current grade in Primary School.

    Our Learning Focus

    Foundation-Building

    Primary 1 and 2

It is very important to build a strong maths foundation in a child’s early years. This foundation will determine how fast and effectively a child can learn and pick up new mathematical skills and knowledge in the later years of their schooling journey. Our curriculum focuses concurrently on mastering the basics and generating interest in the subject.

    Acquiring Skills

    Primary 3 and 4

Our students start to learn and use model and other heuristics on problem questions of varying difficulty. These problem-solving techniques will give them the confidence to solve every question in section C of their math paper.

    Critical Thinking and

    In-Depth Understanding

    Primary 5 and 6

In this stage, we equip students with critical thinking skills, advanced problem solving techniques and in-depth understanding of math topics in order to score well in the toughest math exams. We will teach them alternate problem-solving techniques such as branching and Venn diagram methods. These methods will equip them with all the tools needed to solve the toughest questions in the most challenging topics, including ratio, percentage and fractions.

"My two children attend The Math Classroom and their understanding of math concepts has improved tremendously. My son’s teacher is very patient and encouraging – and very adept at handling active students. My daughter’s teacher explains very clearly, and has been effective in helping her. Both my children always look forward to lessons in the Math Classroom. Thank you teachers!"

Jace, Mother of Tomi P3 and Yuki P5

    Testimonials

"Bryce has been learning with The Math Classroom for 10 months. I wanted him to receive olympiad math training, to increase his exposure to non-routine questions. Currently, he is learning school math and competition math concurrently, which I feel is very balanced. Even thought he is in Primary 2, Bryce is already learning Primary 4 mathematics. Thanks to the Teacher, Bryce is more confident solving problems, and is no longer afraid to try difficult questions."

    Imelda, Mother of Bryce, P2

    Testimonials

"When Johann was selected to train for the National Math Olympiad Singapore (NMOS) competition, we were quite worried as he never learnt math outside of the school syllabus – because of this lack of exposure, the difficult olympiad questions may be too daunting for him. The teacher, however, assured us that Johann would be fine, and hence he started attending lessons at The Math Classroom.

Johann finds the class very interesting and not stressful at all. Over the past few months, his results in math competitions have been outstanding! The last 8 months have been an exciting journey for Johann. Thanks to The Math Classroom!"

Mrs Young, Mother of Johann, P4

    Testimonials

"The teacher is very systematic and structured in her teaching. She is very encouraging and inspiring. Ethan has enjoyed the lesson and able to understand and apply the concept easily. He has learned much despite the short period of time and is determined to achieve better results."

    Evelyn, Mother of Ethan, P5

    Testimonials

“Ms Tou helped me a lot. She is patient in her explanations, and helps me understand better. She helps me learn by showing and explaining various examples for each type of problem. Overall, she's a good teacher in the way she coaches me. Thank you teacher!”

    Kaining, Northbrooks Sec School

    Testimonials

“Thank you Ms Tou for helping me! I used to fail math but with your help, I score mostly A1s now!

    Yume, CHIJ St. Theresa Convent

    Testimonials

“We engaged Ms Tan for our daughter Judina Grace Lopez when she was in primary 5 in the year 2014.

As Judina’s grades in Mathematics was slipping, we decided that she needed one-to-one help as her group tuition did not help at all. Judina is shy by nature and we found out that she was hesitant to ask the tutor for help on her doubts with the group of students in the same room. With Ms Tan, however, Judina was able to open up and ask her for help on any doubts and Ms Tan will always explain to her in a very patient manner. Ms Tan is always punctual and she is also very approachable and friendly at the same time, that my daughter has no hesitation to seek her help. She is also very professional with the way she handles her sessions. Judina jumped from a “fail” in Maths throughout the year, to a “Pass” after just a few months under Ms Tan’s guidance. Ms Tan knows how to motivate a child and does not ever put the child down. She will always tell Judina that she knows she has tried very hard and to keep on trying hard to excel in her grades.

We will readily recommend Ms Tan to anyone who needs help for his or

    her child’s Mathematics."

What age should my child start maths lessons with you?

    Primary 1 and above

We believe that a strong foundation is the most important prerequisite for a student to do well in math throughout his academic journey.

We are experts in nurturing lower primary students into top math talents. We focus on developing a strong foundation, a deep understanding and flexible thinking skills from a young age. With these skills, students will be able to learn mathematics easily and efficiently throughout their academic journey.

4 of our Primary 1 students in the last 4 years have gone on to top their respective schools (Henry Park Primary School, ACS Primary School, Xi Shan Primary School) in annual math exams. One was admitted to the GEP Program, and another was awarded High Distinction (Top 1%) in the New South Wales Mathematics Competition.

We have found it more challenging to improve the mathematical ability of an average P3 or P5 student compared to a P1 student, because some of them have a weak foundation, shallow understanding and many misconceptions about the subject.

    How are lessons conducted?

Individual tuition in a group of 2-4

We conduct individual 1-to-1 lessons in a group setting. Each student will learn according to his/her own level and pacing. This allows us to maximize the learning potential of every student.

Certain students may require more individual attention, which means that a maximum class size of 4 is not optimal. It has as much to do with the ability of the students, as well as their maximum potential. This means that a younger student of highest potential may need more attention than an older student of slightly lesser potential, who has developed close to his peak performance level.

The teacher reserves the right to determine the class size within the range of 2-4 students at their discretion.

    How are fees paid?

    Collected once a term

If a student joins in the middle of a term, fees will be pro-rated. We regret that we are unable to offer refunds for missed lessons.

What happens if a teacher is ill?

If a teacher is ill, we will either have a substitute teacher for that lesson, or cancel class and carry over the lesson credits to the next term. We will try to give our parents as much notice as possible. If a teacher falls ill very close to the lesson time, we are only able to give short notice, and ask for your understanding.
